The demolition of the City of Palms Park baseball stadium in Fort Myers has officially begun, marking the end of a venue that once hosted the Boston Red Sox during their spring training years. The work is being carried out by Honc Destruction, a company owned by Lee County Commissioner David Mulicka, under a contract valued just under $1 million.
A Symbolic End to an Era
The stadium was more than a training ground; it was the stage for championship seasons and memorable performances by stars such as David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez. From 1993 through 2011 the Red Sox used the site to prepare for the regular season, creating moments that resonated with fans across the country.
After the team relocated its spring training operations to JetBlue Park on Daniels Parkway in 2012, city officials explored several alternatives for the under‑utilized property. With the land deemed too valuable to remain idle, the decision was made to redevelop the site, potentially incorporating housing, recreation facilities and retail space that could reshape the surrounding neighborhood.
