Denard Bertram appointed Oak Ridge basketball coach

Former Austin‑East mentor succeeds Aaron Green after 27‑year tenure

Oak Ridge School District has named Denard Bertram as its new head basketball coach, filling the vacancy left by Aaron Green’s retirement after 27 years of service.

A familiar face returns to the sidelines

Bertram arrives after four seasons at Austin‑East, where he compiled an 82‑53 record and guided the Roadrunners to a state tournament appearance in 2024. His coaching journey also includes stints at Midway and Concord Christian, and a role as an assistant on Harriman’s Class A state championship team in 2017.

Green, who stepped down at the end of the previous season, leaves behind a storied legacy of 428 career wins and state championship game appearances in 2014 and 2025. His long tenure helped shape the program’s identity and raised the bar for future coaches.

Last season the team finished 18‑13 and placed third in District 4‑4A, a performance that set the stage for a fresh leadership approach. The administration believes Bertram’s blend of playing experience and developmental focus will sustain the program’s upward trajectory.

Having served as an assistant under Green during their 2014 championship run, Bertram brings an intimate understanding of the program’s culture. He will look to build on that foundation while infusing his own philosophy honed at Austin‑East.
