A Strategic Addition to the Great Danes' Coaching Roster
The University at Albany announced the hiring of Denise King as an assistant coach for its women's basketball team, filling a key role that blends on‑court strategy with a dedicated focus on leadership and player development.
King arrives with more than 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, having most recently led Rider University during the 2025‑26 season. Her career path includes stints as head coach at UMass Lowell and formative years at her alma mater, the University of Rhode Island, where she also excelled as a player.
Career Highlights and Achievements
At Rider, King coached an All‑MAAC Defensive Team member and mentored two All‑Academic selections, while also guiding five all‑conference athletes at UMass Lowell. Earlier, she helped develop four America East All‑Rookie Team picks and two All‑Defensive honorees during her seven‑year tenure at UMass Lowell.
Her playing days at Rhode Island were equally impressive; she scored 1,023 points and remains 15th on the program’s all‑time scoring list. She earned a cum laude bachelor's degree in business management and was recognized by multiple honor societies, including Golden Key and Omicron Delta Kappa.
Athletic Director Jeff Koonce praised King’s blend of competitive acumen and commitment to student‑athlete growth, stating that her leadership will help the Great Danes advance both on the scoreboard and in personal development.
