Denise King Joins University at Albany Women’s Basketball Staff

Veteran coach brings two decades of experience and a focus on leadership development

The University at Albany revealed this week that Denise King has been appointed assistant coach for the Great Danes women's basketball team, a move that injects more than 20 years of collegiate coaching expertise into the program.

A career built on development

King will serve as the Assistant Coach/Director of Leadership & Player Development, a role that underscores the university's emphasis on holistic athlete growth. Her tenure at Rider University during the 2025‑26 season showcased her ability to mentor talent, as she guided an All‑MAAC Defensive Team member and two All‑Academic selections.

Prior to Rider, King spent seven years at UMass Lowell, four of which she served as head coach. In that time she coached four America East All‑Rookie Team honorees and two All‑Defensive Team members, while also recruiting five all‑conference student‑athletes.

A journey that began in Rhode Island

King's coaching roots trace back to her alma mater, the University of Rhode Island, where she began her career after a distinguished playing stint that placed her 15th on the program's all‑time scoring list with 1,023 points. She earned a bachelor's degree in business management cum laude in 2004 and was recognized in three honor societies, including the Golden Key International Honor Society.

Her early achievements also included the Speaker of the House of Representatives' Scholar‑Athlete Award for the State of Rhode Island, reflecting a blend of athletic prowess and academic excellence.

Leadership philosophy and future impact

Known for cultivating players both on and off the court, King's approach blends rigorous skill development with a focus on character and leadership. Athletic Director Kelly Morrone praised the hire, noting that King's extensive background will strengthen the program's competitive edge and community outreach.

The addition of King is expected to deepen the Great Danes' recruiting pipeline and enhance their strategic approach to player development, positioning the team for sustained success in the America East Conference.
