Florida Polytechnic University announced a milestone on Tuesday, naming former NBA forward Dennis Hopson as its inaugural men’s basketball coach, a move that signals the school’s ambitious entry into intercollegiate athletics slated for the fall of 2026.
A Legacy of Excellence
Hopson arrives with a résumé that reads like a basketball Hall of Fame highlight reel. A 1987 Big Ten Player of the Year at Ohio State, he was selected third overall in the NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets and enjoyed a six‑year professional stint before transitioning to coaching.
His coaching journey includes stints as an assistant at Northwood University and Bowling Green State University, followed by a five‑year tenure as head coach at NAIA member Lourdes University, where he compiled a winning record and mentored multiple All‑Conference players.
A New Era for Florida Poly
The university, located in Lakeland, will officially launch its athletics program this autumn, positioning itself within the competitive landscape of the NAIA and The Sun Conference, a partnership that promises heightened visibility and scheduling challenges.
A Strategic Fit
The decision to hire Hopson reflects a calculated strategy: his proven ability to develop talent and his deep connections in Ohio and Michigan — regions that align with the university’s geographic footprint — are expected to accelerate recruiting and community engagement.
Looking Forward
Athletic director Dr. Maria Alvarez emphasized that Hopson’s appointment is more than a hiring move; it is a statement of intent. ‘We are building a program that competes with heart and integrity,’ she said, noting that the university’s integration into The Sun Conference will begin with a full slate of conference games in the 2026‑27 season.
