A Pioneering Coach for a New Program
Dennis Hopson, an NBA champion and seasoned coach, has been selected as the inaugural head coach of Florida Polytechnic University’s men’s basketball program, marking a historic milestone for the institution.
Hopson’s playing career includes stints with the Chicago Bulls, New Jersey Nets and Sacramento Kings, culminating in a 1991 championship ring with the Bulls, the only team to complete a perfect 63‑0 season.
After hanging up his sneakers, he turned to coaching, most recently guiding Lourdes University’s Gray Wolves to nearly a hundred victories over five seasons, a testament to his ability to develop talent and instill discipline.
Values‑Driven Basketball
Central to his philosophy are six core values — family, integrity, balance, respect, attitude and leadership — that he intends to weave into every practice and game, emphasizing that basketball is a vehicle for life lessons.
‘We are looking for student‑athletes who excel academically and demonstrate high character,’ Hopson said, underscoring that recruitment will prioritize scholars as much as athletes.
Derek Lower, Florida Poly’s athletic director, praised Hopson’s blend of championship experience and leadership, noting that the university is on the cusp of finalizing its first roster and preparing for a debut season that promises both competitiveness and community engagement.
