Deon Thompson, a key member of UNC’s 2009 national championship team, is set to transition from player to coach, joining the Tar Heels’ men’s basketball staff under head coach Michael Malone.
During his four-year tenure at North Carolina, Thompson appeared in 152 games, starting 113, and helped the team secure the 2009 title, averaging 10.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in the championship run.
After a professional career that took him to Greece, Slovenia, Germany, Lithuania, Serbia, Israel and other leagues, where he earned All‑Star honors and captured multiple championship titles, Thompson will now pursue a master’s degree at UNC’s Kenan‑Flagler Business School while beginning his coaching duties.
A New Chapter for the Tar Heels
Thompson’s addition follows a wave of former Tar Heels assistants who have remained on staff after Hubert Davis took the helm, including Sean May and Pat Sullivan, while Marcus Paige has moved on to an assistant role at Charlotte.
In a further reshuffle, Malone has also brought in former Arkansas assistant Chuck Martin, expanding the coaching cadre that blends playing experience with fresh strategic perspectives.
The move underscores UNC’s commitment to developing talent both on and off the court, blending championship pedigree with business acumen as the program looks ahead to the next season.
