Deon Thompson Returns to UNC as Graduate Assistant Coach

Former Tar Heel star brings championship experience back to Chapel Hill

A Champion Comes Home

Deon Thompson, a 2009 national champion who once dazzled the nation with his play for the University of North Carolina, is back in Chapel Hill, this time not as a player but as a graduate assistant coach. The move comes as Thompson pursues a master's degree at the Kenan‑Flagler Business School while joining the coaching staff under new head coach Michael Malone.

Thompson’s collegiate résumé reads like a Tar Heel Hall of Fame highlight reel. From 2007 to 2010 he amassed more than 1,400 points and 700 rebounds, anchored the 2008‑09 championship squad and held the record for most games played until the NCAA’s extra‑year eligibility rule opened the door for many. His career averages of 10.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game only hint at the impact he had on the court.

After college, Thompson took his game abroad, capturing league titles in Germany, Israel, Lithuania and Serbia, and representing the Ivory Coast on the world stage, including a stint at the 2019 Basketball World Cup. His international experience now brings a global perspective to UNC’s developing program.

Michael Malone, who was hired to lead the Tar Heels, emphasized the value of Thompson’s blend of championship pedigree and business acumen. “Deon embodies the relentless work ethic we want,” Malone said, noting that Thompson’s enrollment at Kenan‑Flagler will enrich the team’s culture both on and off the court.

The return has also sparked nostalgia among former teammates and alumni. Tyler Hansbrough, Hubert Davis, Sean May and Pat Sullivan — all iconic figures in UNC basketball — have publicly praised the decision, seeing it as a positive step for the program’s future.
