DePaul University is moving forward with a $42.4 million basketball practice facility that will replace five aging structures at the northwest corner of West Belden Avenue and North Sheffield Avenue. The project, situated adjacent to the current Sullivan Athletic Center, marks a significant upgrade to the university’s athletic infrastructure.
Design and sustainability
The architectural concept draws on the brick façade and pitched roof of the historic Alumni Hall, the former Lincoln Park arena, while incorporating floor‑to‑ceiling glass that offers views of the surrounding neighborhood. Bird‑friendly glass and rooftop solar panels are expected to cut energy consumption by more than 10 percent.
Inside, the ground floor will house athletic department offices, locker rooms, strength‑conditioning areas, and sports‑medicine therapy spaces. The second level is dedicated to basketball operations, providing dedicated offices for the men’s and women’s coaches. Above them, two practice courts — one for each gender — will be paired with additional meeting rooms and therapy facilities.
Demolition and construction timeline
Demolition has already begun on the properties at 2308 North Sheffield and 2314 North Sheffield. Permits for the remaining three structures at 2300, 2310 and 2316 North Sheffield have been issued, clearing the way for foundation work by general contractor Bulley & Andrews. Henegahn Wrecking & Excavating will handle the site clearance before construction commences.
