A Legend's Return to the Links
Derek Lowe, a retired Major League Baseball All-Star and World Series champion, is set to tee off at this year’s American Century Championship, bringing his competitive fire to the golf course.
The three‑day event will be held July 10‑12 at Edgewood Tahoe, a lake‑front resort that has become a staple of the summer sports calendar. Coverage will be split between NBC and its streaming platform Peacock, giving viewers multiple ways to follow the action.
Lowe will be joined by a star‑studded field that includes NBA sharpshooter Stephen Curry, former NHL standout Joe Pavelski, tennis veteran Mardy Fish, baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz and golf legend Annika Sörenstam, among others.
In a brief conversation at past golf outings, Lowe exchanged words with NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes, whose father once played in the majors from 1992 to 2003. Mahomes, a promising college baseball prospect, ultimately chose football, a decision Lowe respects.
Beyond the competition, the tournament distributes $750,000 in prize money, a portion of which is earmarked for charitable causes. Over the years, the event has contributed more than $8 million to non‑profits, underscoring its impact beyond the scoreboard.
