The Professional Women’s Hockey League franchise based in Boston revealed that Derek Whitmore will join its coaching staff as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2026‑27 season. The move comes after a distinguished playing career and a series of progressive roles within the organization, positioning Whitmore at the forefront of the team’s developmental strategy.
From Ice Rink to Development Hub
Whitmore’s journey to the bench began long before his recent promotion. Over more than a decade of professional play, he logged 369 games in the AHL, netting 95 goals and 172 points while earning three AHL Man of the Year awards for his charitable work. His experience spans leagues in the NHL, AHL, DEL, EBEL and ECHL, giving him a global perspective on the sport.
After retiring from competition, Whitmore turned to coaching, first serving as an assistant with the USHL’s Chicago Steel from 2021 to 2023. In that role he helped shape the careers of over 20 NHL Draft prospects, including forward Jackson Blake. He then spent two years in Maine running Whitmore Hockey Development, where he refined player growth programs that emphasized both skill and character.
Academic and Collegiate Coaching Stints
Whitmore’s coaching résumé also includes stints at the collegiate level. He served as an assistant with the men’s hockey program at Mercyhurst University during the 2020‑21 season and previously contributed to the Bowdoin College women’s program from 2018 to 2020. Both positions allowed him to blend academic rigor with athletic development, further honing his ability to mentor young talent.
The Boston Fleet’s general manager, Danielle Marmer, praised Whitmore’s “knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for the team,” noting that his background aligns perfectly with the franchise’s ambition to blend competitive edge with community engagement.
