Derrick White, a former NBA champion and Olympic gold‑medalist, has been appointed as the University of Colorado’s first president of basketball strategy, a newly created position that will steer the program’s long‑term vision.
Strategic Investment and Roster Overhaul
The announcement coincides with a $2 million contribution to the men’s basketball program, a financial boost designed to fund facility upgrades, staff development and recruiting initiatives.
The current roster reflects a transitional phase: two‑thirds of the players are newcomers, and seven of the 13 scholarship spots are held by freshmen, underscoring the team’s rebuilding effort.
Coach Tad Boyle described the existing players as “starry‑eyed” by White’s achievements, recalling White’s lone standout season at CU in 2016‑17 and his nine‑year NBA career that includes titles with San Antonio and Boston, as well as an Olympic gold medal.
Boyle also hinted at a possible retirement in the near future, expressing gratitude for White’s influence and emphasizing that sustained success will require broader institutional support and resources.
White’s appointment marks a strategic shift for the Buffaloes, who hope to leverage his NBA pedigree and network to attract talent and elevate Colorado basketball within the competitive Pac‑12 conference.
