A New Chapter for Colorado Basketball
Derrick White, a guard for the Boston Celtics and Olympic gold medalist, has been appointed president of basketball strategy at the University of Colorado, a role that will see him work directly with head coach Tad Boyle to shape the program’s future.
White’s basketball pedigree stretches back to his lone season with the Colorado Buffaloes in 2016‑17, where he averaged 18.1 points and 4.4 assists, earned Pac‑12 all‑conference first‑team honors, and was named team MVP.
During that season he also collected all‑defensive team recognition and secured a spot on the all‑tournament squad, achievements that helped him rise to the 29th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft.
After being selected by the San Antonio Spurs, White’s professional journey led him to the Boston Celtics in February 2022, where he contributed to a championship‑winning side in 2024 and was part of the Team USA roster that captured gold at the Paris Games that summer.
Beyond his on‑court successes, White and his family have pledged $2 million to the university’s men’s basketball program, a gift intended to fund scholarships, facility upgrades and player development initiatives.
In his new capacity, White will assist Coach Boyle in mentoring the next generation of Buffaloes, leveraging his NBA and international experience to guide recruits and refine the team’s strategic approach.
Strategic Vision and Community Impact
White has said that his vision centers on building a culture of excellence that blends competitive drive with academic achievement, aiming to produce players who succeed both on the hardwood and in the classroom.
