Descendants Honor 1904 Fort Shaw Indian Girls Basketball Team in Montana

A mural unveiling and remembrance event celebrates the historic World's Fair champions

A Living Legacy

Descendants of the 1904 Fort Shaw Indian Girls basketball team gathered in Fort Benton, Montana, to commemorate the pioneering squad that captured the world’s attention at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.

The ceremony, organized by Destination Fort Benton with the assistance of historian Ken Robison and researcher Ardis Cecil, featured the unveiling of a mural painted by Rilie Tane that portrays the young Indigenous athletes in motion.

Among those present were family members of the original players, including great‑granddaughter Michele Dann Hernandez, who offered a sage blessing, and Linda Peavy, co‑author of a book chronicling the team’s story.

Fred Campbell, who once served as school superintendent and championed the team’s promotion, was remembered for his early advocacy that helped the girls travel and compete on a national stage.

The original roster included players such as Emma Sansaver, Genevieve Healy, Belle Johnson, Nettie Wirth, Genie Butch, Minnie Burton, Katie Snell, Flora Lucero, Rose LaRose, Sarah Mitchell, Josephine Langley and many others, each representing distinct tribes such as Metis, Gros Ventre and Assiniboine.

Their participation not only showcased exceptional basketball skill but also served as a powerful statement of Indigenous representation in early American sport, setting a precedent that resonates with today’s efforts to preserve and celebrate Native histories.

Although the championship trophy from the 1904 Fair is no longer extant, replicas have been created for the descendants as tangible links to the past, while the mural stands as a permanent visual tribute.

The event also highlighted ongoing collaborations with institutions like Fort Shaw Indian School and drew attention from media platforms, including a mention on Facebook, underscoring the broad interest in this cultural milestone.

Organizers hope the gathering will inspire further research, education and tourism, ensuring that the story of the Fort Shaw Indian Girls continues to attract new generations eager to learn about their ancestors’ contributions to sport and culture.
