Detroit’s New Additions Strengthen PWHL Roster Ahead of Draft
The Professional Women’s Hockey League announced a wave of signings that underscore Detroit’s growing presence in the sport. The franchise added five athletes as part of a broader expansion effort, positioning the city to host the league’s annual entry draft on June 17.
Jesse Compher, a forward and younger sister of Detroit Red Wings standout J.T. Compher, arrives after a breakout season in which she recorded nine goals and nine assists in 30 games. Her offensive instincts add depth to a roster that is eager to compete.
Britta Curl‑Salemme, known for her scoring prowess, brings a single‑season PWHL record of 11 goals and 18 assists from the previous campaign. Off the ice, her social‑media activity has sparked discussion, but her on‑ice contributions remain a key asset.
Cayla Barnes and Hannah Bilka, both alumni of Boston College, join the team after earning gold with Team USA. Barnes posted three goals, five assists and a minus‑16 rating last season, while Bilka contributed four goals and five assists in just 14 games, showcasing her efficiency.
Daryl Watts signed the longest contract in league history, a four‑year deal that reflects the franchise’s commitment to retaining top talent. Over 81 career games with Ottawa and Toronto, Watts has tallied 32 goals and 31 assists.
The upcoming draft will mark the culmination of a season that saw the league welcome four new clubs, including Detroit, Hamilton, Las Vegas and San Jose. With the city poised to host the event, the organization looks to build on the momentum generated by these signings.
