A Promising Addition to the Crimson Tide
CBS Sports analysts have identified Alabama football's transfer defensive lineman Devan Thompkins as a potential breakout player for the 2026 season, noting his size, skill set, and the excitement he brings to the program.
Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 290 pounds, Thompkins arrived from Southern California with a reputation for dominance. In 2025 he posted career highs of 31 tackles, three sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble, numbers that have drawn praise for their disruptive versatility.
Addressing Defensive Gaps Left by Departures
Alabama’s defense suffered significant losses when pass rushers Qua Russaw and James Smith transferred to Ohio State. Russaw, limited to nine games because of a broken foot, managed 14 tackles and one sack, while Smith recorded 28 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss in his sophomore year.
To fill those voids, the Crimson Tide bolstered the line with Thompkins alongside newcomers Caleb Woodson and Terrance Green. The trio was highlighted by ESPN as among Alabama’s top newcomers for 2026, and 247Sports ranked Thompkins the ninth‑best defensive lineman in the transfer portal.
Analysts emphasize Thompkins’s quick first step and interior versatility, traits that align with the program’s need for a steady, disruptive presence. An SEC source believes his dependability could translate into a first‑round draft projection, underscoring the impact his performance could have on both the field and his professional future.
