Dijon FCO’s NFC‑Enabled Scarves Redefine Stadium Access

The French second‑tier club partners with Weezevent to turn fan apparel into a digital gateway for entry and purchases.

French second‑tier side Dijon FCO has taken a bold step toward the future of matchday logistics, swapping paper tickets for scarves embedded with NFC chips.

A New Era of Stadium Access

When fans slip the club‑branded owl‑emblazoned scarf over their shoulders, a simple tap at the turnstile reads the chip, granting instant entry and unlocking a contact‑less payment channel for drinks and snacks inside the stadium.

Pierre‑Henri Deballon, the club’s president and co‑founder, worked with technology partner Weezevent to turn the accessory into a badge of belonging, saying the scarf is meant to be both a fashion statement and a functional tool for supporters.

The initiative marks the first deployment of such a system in France, though it follows experiments abroad; German Bundesliga outfit FC Köln and Swiss club FC St Gallen have piloted NFC‑enabled garments, with the latter rewarding top fans with points that could be exchanged for a full season ticket.

Earlier uses of NFC in sport have ranged from Mexico’s ‘Jersey Pay’ system that let supporters purchase Corona beer with a shirt, to Brazil’s Atletico Mineiro shirts that opened digital content when tapped, illustrating a growing appetite for seamless fan interactions.

Beyond convenience, Dijon FCO sees the technology as a way to modernize the spectator experience, reinforce the club’s visual identity and deepen loyalty, turning every matchday into a blend of tradition and innovation.
