Dodgers Edge Past Padres in 4-2 Victory
The Los Angeles Dodgers secured a 4-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night, taking two of three games in their series and extending their lead in the NL West to ten games.
Freddie Freeman sparked the offense with a tiebreaking, bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning, while Shohei Ohtani delivered an RBI single in the third to put the Dodgers ahead early. Manny Machado’s solo homer off Emmet Sheehan in the fourth gave the Padres a brief lead, but the Dodgers answered with a nine-run sixth that featured a three-run homer from Mookie Betts.
Sheehan turned in a solid five-inning outing, limiting the Padres to a single run and two hits, but Michael King’s struggles continued as he walked Alex Freeland and surrendered four consecutive batters before being pulled. Reliever Edgardo Henriquez closed out the ninth for his first save of the season.
The win lifted Los Angeles to a season-best 54-30 record, the best in baseball, and pushed their division advantage to ten games over San Diego. The club will next travel to Sacramento, where left-hander Eric Lauer is slated to oppose A’s lefty Gage Jump on Monday night.
With the series wrapped up, the Dodgers look to maintain their momentum as they head into a crucial stretch of games that could define their postseason outlook.
