Dominican Republic Dominates Nicaragua in Quarterfinal Push
The Dominican Republic’s women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance on July 15, routing Nicaragua 90‑54 in the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup Centrobasket Qualifiers. Aurura Almón contributed six points and pulled down 12 rebounds, underscoring her role as a key interior presence.
Kiyomi McMiller answered with a game‑high 24 points for Nicaragua, but the effort was insufficient against a Dominican side that controlled the tempo from the opening quarter. The victory not only secured a quarterfinal berth but also placed the Dominican squad among the three teams that will earn direct spots for the 2027 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, a tournament that will be hosted by El Salvador.
The qualifiers, which run from July 12 to July 18, feature eight elite teams from Central America and the Caribbean, including Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Guyana and the Virgin Islands. While Nicaragua’s campaign ends in the classification round, the Dominican Republic now prepares for the next stage with momentum on its side.
El Salvador, already qualified as the host nation for the continental championship, will join the top three finishers in the upcoming tournament, adding another layer of excitement for regional fans.
