Donna Carr Returns to Coach at Georgia Southern, Linking Past and Future

The former Salisbury High star now mentors rising guard Kyla Bryant, weaving a new chapter in her basketball journey.

A Full‑Circle Moment for a Salisbury Native

Donna Carr, a Salisbury High School legend who once dazzled at the University of South Carolina and later played professionally in Finland, has been appointed assistant coach at Georgia Southern University. Her return to the state where she first honed her craft comes after a diverse career that included corporate work and a coaching stop at Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia.

The move also reunites Carr with Kyla Bryant, a rising senior guard who transferred to Georgia Southern in spring 2025. Bryant not only broke Carr’s scoring record at Salisbury High but also led the team to back‑to‑back state titles in 2022 and 2023, making her one of the most celebrated players to emerge from the program.

Carr will work under new head coach Heather Macy, who announced the hiring as part of a staff reshuffle that followed Hana Haden’s departure to Memphis. The coaching staff overhaul reflects a broader effort to rebuild the program, which finished the regular season with a 23‑8 record and will welcome eight fresh faces next year.

Beyond the X’s and O’s, Carr’s appointment signals a personal homecoming. She will mentor Bryant, whose mother’s teammate and former coach Lakai Brice remains a close family friend, adding a layer of narrative richness to the team’s dynamics.

Carr expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, citing the program’s recent success and the chance to shape a new era. Her experience, both on the court and off, positions her to guide the Eagles toward another championship run.
