Donovan Williams, a tire carrier for Spire Motorsports' No. 7 Chevrolet and a member of the Hendrick Motorsports athletics department, was recently presented with the Hendrick Motorsports Spirit Award in recognition of his extraordinary effort and impact.
A perilous pit lane
The award stems from an incident that unfolded during the recent NASCAR race weekend at Dover Motor Speedway, where a heavy pit cart lost control and barreled down a hill toward the pit area, putting several individuals in danger.
Amanda Busick, a reporter for NASCAR on FOX, found herself directly in the cart’s path. Without hesitation, Williams stepped between her and the rolling equipment, absorbing the impact and sustaining minor injuries that required hospitalization.
Recognition and reflection
Busick later visited Williams in the hospital, expressing profound gratitude and recounting how his quick thinking likely saved her life. Her visit underscored the personal connection forged by the incident.
Evan Kureczka, Hendrick’s Athletic Director, praised Williams for putting his own safety on the line to protect a colleague, noting that the Spirit Award celebrates extraordinary effort and impact that transcend ordinary performance.
Williams, who initially expected the honor to go to someone with more seniority, reflected on the experience as one of the scariest moments of his career and expressed humility about receiving the award, acknowledging the collective effort of the pit crew.
