The Drake women's soccer team opened its 2026 season on the road, facing the Wyoming Cowgirls in a match that would be decided by a single moment of brilliance.
From the first whistle the Cowgirls controlled play, outshooting the Bulldogs 9‑2 in the opening half while Drake managed only two attempts, both on target but unable to break through.
Early Pressure and a Red Card
Zoey Mahoney, who led Drake with two shots on goal, kept the team’s attack alive despite the early onslaught.
The pressure told in the 38th minute when Alanna Pennington collected a second yellow card, leaving the Bulldogs a player short for the remainder of the contest.
Despite the numerical deficit, Drake held firm, entering the break level at 0‑0 thanks to a series of crucial saves by Addie Ford, who finished the half with four stops.
The second half saw Wyoming continue to dominate, generating ten shots while Drake could only muster two, both on goal but denied by the Cowgirls' defense.
A Late Decider
In the final 13 seconds, Alyssa Glover pounced on a loose ball and drove it home, securing a 1‑0 victory for Wyoming.
Coach Lindsey Horner praised the squad's grit and discipline, acknowledging the challenges of travel, altitude and playing a man down, while emphasizing that the experience will inform the team's growth.
Looking Ahead
Drake will next travel to Colorado Springs on August 16 to meet Colorado College, hoping to translate the lessons learned into a positive result on the road.
