A drive‑by shooting erupted late Sunday night near a World Cup fan zone on the outskirts of San Jose, California, leaving one person dead and another fighting for their life.
Isolated Incident, Police Say
The victims, both residents of San Jose, were caught in the crossfire as gunmen opened fire from a moving vehicle, according to the San Jose Police Department.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive, officials said.
Security Ramp‑Up for Fan Zone
San Jose Police Chief Maria Lopez assured the public that the shooting was an isolated act of violence and that the department would deploy additional officers and security personnel to the area.
The fan zone, which had drawn more than 100 supporters the previous evening to watch a match, reopened the next day under a heightened security presence, with multiple patrol cars and uniformed guards stationed at entry points.
Fans expressed relief at the added protection; one supporter from Paraguay, who had attended the event the day after the shooting, said she felt safe returning to watch the games.
FIFA declined to comment on the incident or on the safety measures surrounding fan zones, leaving local authorities to handle the response.
