A Novel Twist on Soccer
Drone soccer is a modified version of the traditional game in which lightweight, cage‑enclosed drones replace human players. Inside a netted arena, teams maneuver their drones to block opponents while attempting to guide one of their own through a goal for points. The sport, inspired by a fictional version in the Harry Potter series, has been adapted for classroom use as a STEM outreach tool.
The program was launched with a $35,050 grant from the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation and initially hosted at Ben Reifel Middle School’s Community Learning Center. Its success prompted expansion to Patrick Henry and Whittier Middle Schools, where after‑school clubs now meet regularly to design, assemble and pilot the flying machines.
Hands‑On Learning and Friendly Competition
Organizer Victoria Vetter explains that participants encounter practical hurdles such as propeller failures and battery management, turning each setback into a lesson in electronics, robotics, aviation and basic programming. Andrew Demchuck, a student at Patrick Henry Middle School, joined the camp because he loves soccer and wanted to experience the thrill of building his own drone. Damian Hermanson, a seventh‑grader at Ben Reifel, expressed excitement about creating and flying his personal drone, while Ian Plocher and Caden Fjeldheim, also from Patrick Henry, brought prior drone experience to the mix. Maxwell Jensen, an eighth‑grader, highlighted the social aspect, noting that the club offers a welcoming space to meet new friends while learning.
Competitions are slated to begin this fall, with plans for inter‑school tournaments that could involve teams from nearby districts in Minneapolis and Denver. The prospect of regional play adds a competitive edge to the educational experience and may inspire similar programs across the country.
Looking Ahead
Program leaders envision a growing network of drone‑soccer clubs that blend physical activity with technical skill development. As more schools observe the model, the hope is that the sport will become a staple of extracurricular STEM offerings, providing students with a dynamic way to explore engineering principles while enjoying a fast‑moving, collaborative game.
