Duke University is preparing for the 2026 football season with a focus on rebuilding a defense that lost several key contributors to the transfer portal. Head coach Manny Diaz, who guided the Blue Devils to a nine‑win campaign and an ACC championship in his first two years, remains confident that the roster can compete at the top of the conference.
The departure of quarterback Darian Mensah shocked the fan base, but Diaz emphasized continuity and contractual stability when addressing the move. He noted that the program has leveraged the portal to bring in experienced talent, including safety Patrick Smith‑Young, whose collegiate journey spans North Texas, Old Dominion and a recent return to North Texas.
Smith‑Young arrives in Durham after a breakout 2023 season in which he amassed 77 tackles, two pass breakups and a forced fumble for North Texas. His prior experience at Old Dominion, where he recorded 42 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and an interception, demonstrates a track record of production that could bolster Duke’s secondary.
Alongside Smith‑Young, other transfers such as Andrew Pellicciotta, DaShawn Stone and Leon Griffin III have joined the squad, giving Diaz a depth chart that blends youthful energy with veteran savvy. The coaching staff believes this mix positions the Blue Devils to challenge for an ACC title despite a projected step back by many conference rivals.
The broader landscape of college football also plays a role. While the ACC is expected to see a modest decline in overall competitiveness next season, Miami remains an outlier poised to maintain its upward trajectory.
