Duke University entered the 2025 season with its linebacker corps severely depleted by injuries, forcing the staff to lean on unexpected depth and reshuffle the defensive scheme.
A Rebuilding Defense
Third‑year head coach Manny Diaz has repeatedly highlighted the improved linebacker room as the team's strongest asset for the upcoming 2026 campaign, emphasizing both continuity and new competition.
Veteran presence remains anchored by Luke Mergott, who seized a larger role after Nick Morris Jr. was sidelined, finishing the season with 90 tackles, seven tackles for loss and two interceptions. Morris, who has endured two season‑ending injuries, returns after logging 785 snaps and starting 10 games across 24 appearances.
The unit also showcases emerging talent such as Bradley Gompers, who recorded 14 tackles, 1.5 for loss and a fumble recovery in 12 games, and Kendall Johnson, who comes back fully healthy after amassing 56 tackles, five for loss and two sacks in 26 career appearances.
Adding to the mix are true freshmen Colsen Gatten and Tony Grimmer, alongside redshirt juniors Will Felder Jr. and Asher Wasserman, who together bring a blend of youthful energy and experience that Diaz believes can elevate the defense.
The newly configured group will make its first test against Tulane on September 5, a matchup that could set the tone for the season and showcase the depth Diaz has cultivated.
