A Milestone for Minnesota Hockey
The International Ice Hockey Federation announced that Duluth will welcome the 2027 Under-18 Men’s World Championship, bringing ten national teams together for 29 games at the AMSOIL Arena. The event will transform the city into a temporary epicenter of elite junior hockey, offering fans a first look at players who could soon headline NHL rosters.
Bill Guerin, president of hockey operations for the Minnesota Wild, emphasized that the tournament serves as a vital platform for showcasing future NHL talent. “This is a chance for the world to see the skill and passion that will drive the next generation of stars,” he said in a statement.
Pat Kelleher, executive director of USA Hockey, praised Duluth’s storied hockey culture as the perfect backdrop for the competition. “The city’s rinks, its fans, and its commitment to the sport make it an ideal setting for a tournament of this magnitude,” Kelleher added.
Haley Hedstrom, president and CEO of Visit Duluth, highlighted the economic and community benefits, noting that the influx of teams, media, and spectators will energize local businesses and reinforce the city’s reputation as a hockey destination.
Legacy of the Under‑18 Tournament
The championship has a storied history of launching NHL careers. Past editions have featured future superstars such as Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel and Kirill Kaprizov, who honed their skills on the international stage before becoming household names.
Organizers expect a similar pipeline this year, with scouts and general managers watching closely as prospects battle for draft eligibility. The tournament’s format, spread across multiple venues in the Twin Cities, is designed to test players in a variety of competitive environments.
While the full schedule and ticket details are slated for release later this year, anticipation is already building among fans and families who plan to travel to Duluth for what promises to be a memorable sporting weekend.
