Duncan Carver, a sophomore right‑hander from western North Carolina, announced his verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina on August 26, sharing the news on Instagram. In a heartfelt post he thanked his family, the Panthers Organization, Coach Staicar and the ACR coaching staff for their role in his development.
Carver capped his breakout season with a 9‑1 record, a 2.08 earned run average and 85 strikeouts, numbers that helped his team advance to the fourth round of the NCHSAA 6A playoffs before a loss to South Caldwell.
The pitcher’s performance underscored a growing pipeline of talent from the region, a trend that has seen three western North Carolina arms commit to ACC programs in the past two months.
A Rising Tide in Western North Carolina
Earlier in July, Holt Gaston pledged to North Carolina State, and Kameron Keenan chose Virginia Tech, signaling a competitive recruiting landscape that benefits both the athletes and the schools. The commitments reflect not only individual ambition but also the increasing visibility of the region’s baseball programs, which have attracted attention from college scouts and media alike.
