A Rhode Island court has cleared former Providence basketball standout Duncan Powell of two misdemeanor charges stemming from an alleged March altercation.
Prosecutors had accused Powell of domestic violence‑simple assault and/or battery as well as domestic violence‑disturbing the peace after a dispute that reportedly turned physical when he threw a water bottle, striking the woman's knee.
According to the case file, the confrontation escalated when Powell pursued the woman to a residence in Cranston, where he allegedly brandished a firearm. He was taken into custody in Cranston, but no weapon was recovered.
A brief basketball career
Powell completed his fifth year of eligibility in the past season, having originally risen through the college ranks before returning to the court for a final campaign.
Born in Dallas, Texas, he carried the city’s basketball heritage into the Northeast, where his performances earned him a place among the notable alumni of Providence College.
The acquittal removes a legal cloud that had lingered over Powell’s post‑collegiate plans, though the episode will likely remain a footnote in a career defined by on‑court resilience.
