Dusty May, who spent the last two seasons steering the Michigan Wolverines to a 64‑13 record, two Big Ten titles and a national championship, announced that he will step down as head coach and take the reins of the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA.
His departure follows a contract that paid $4.6 million in the 2025‑26 season, included a $250,000 annual raise and featured a buyout clause reduced to $5 million after April 30, 2026.
A surprising pivot
The move also places him in charge of a young core that includes Cooper Flagg, the projected 2025‑26 Rookie of the Year, giving the Mavericks a high‑profile centerpiece for the future.
Although May had been courted for a contract extension throughout the NCAA tournament and had spoken of his loyalty to Ann Arbor, the allure of the NBA and the chance to work with Flagg proved decisive.
