Legal response to online hate
The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has lodged a formal complaint with the public prosecutor after a surge of racist messages appeared on social media following the Netherlands' elimination from the World Cup.
The Dutch side were knocked out in Monterrey after a 1‑1 draw with Morocco that went to a penalty shoot‑out in the round‑of‑32, a match in which Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville missed their spot‑kicks.
All three players were subsequently subjected to a wave of online abuse that singled out their race, prompting the KNVB to hand the threatening messages over to prosecutors for further investigation.
Prime Minister Rob Jetten described the abuse as completely unacceptable and urged the prosecutors to pursue legal action, stressing the importance of setting a clear example for future incidents.
While the KNVB acknowledges that it cannot detect every hateful reaction, it argues that the complaint is about sending a societal signal and deterring discrimination in football and beyond.
