Dwayle Smith, a 5‑foot‑11 defensive back from Baltimore’s Saint Frances Academy, announced his commitment to the University of Iowa on Tuesday, becoming the first player to pledge to the Hawkeyes in the 2028 recruiting cycle.
The announcement follows a whirlwind recruitment that saw Smith receive offers from a suite of Power Five programs, including Florida State, Syracuse, Texas A&M and Wisconsin, before narrowing his list and ultimately choosing Iowa less than two months after the Hawkeyes extended their invitation in early May.
A milestone for Iowa’s emerging class
Smith’s pledge marks a symbolic first for Iowa’s 2028 cohort, a class that the coaching staff hopes will set the tone for future recruiting battles in the Midwest. At 175 pounds, the young defender brings a blend of agility and physicality that aligns with the Hawkeyes’ defensive schematics.
Coaches at Iowa highlighted Smith’s high school production and his ability to adapt to the collegiate speed of play. “We’ve been tracking Dwayle for over a year,” said Iowa’s defensive coordinator. “His work ethic and football IQ make him a perfect fit for the direction we’re heading.”
The commitment also underscores the growing reach of Iowa’s recruiting footprint beyond traditional hotbeds. By securing a player from the Baltimore area, the Hawkeyes join a short list of Big Ten programs that have successfully tapped talent on the East Coast in recent cycles.
