Dystany Spurlock Makes History at Richmond Raceway

The trailblazing driver celebrates her roots and looks ahead to a full‑time NASCAR Cup career

A Milestone on the Track

Dystany Spurlock, the pioneering driver who became the first Black woman to compete in NASCAR’s Craftsman Truck Series, is back in Richmond ahead of the upcoming race at Richmond Raceway. The 34‑year‑old, who now calls North Carolina home, returned to the city where she spent her formative years to celebrate a milestone that many thought would never arrive.

Born in 1992 in King William and raised in the Richmond metropolitan area, Spurlock’s love of speed was sparked by the roar of engines drifting through her grandfather’s house near the track. By the time she was 17 she had already set world records in motorcycle drag racing, clocking 178 mph and becoming the first woman to win the Real Street class. Her early triumphs paved the way for a transition to car racing, where she later qualified for a Truck Series start, finishing 36th, and now aims for a top‑15 finish on her home circuit.

Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges

Highland Springs High School, where she once played football on a boys’ team despite the lack of formal rules for female athletes, honored her with a proclamation designating August 13 as ‘Dystany Spurlock Day.’ County Manager John Vithoulkas and Varina District Supervisor Tyrone Nelson presented the honor alongside her mother, Robin Spurlock, and her grandfather, Robert Spurlock, underscoring the community’s role in nurturing her determination.

Beyond the track, Spurlock credits the support of her family and educators for giving her the confidence to chase a dream that stretches far beyond a single race. She envisions a future in which she competes full‑time in the NASCAR Cup Series, while continuing to serve as a beacon for underrepresented groups in motorsports.
