EA SPORTS Turns Oakland’s Fruitvale Into a Grassroots Football Hub

The company’s FC FUTURES program blends digital gaming with real‑world infrastructure, aiming to inspire the next generation of players.

EA SPORTS has unveiled a renovated youth soccer field in Oakland’s Fruitvale neighborhood, turning a modest pitch into a community hub that bridges the gap between video games and real‑world sport.

A Festival of Football Marks the Opening

The official opening on June 9 was marked by a Festival of Football that partnered with Oakland Genesis, a local youth soccer nonprofit, and featured training drills inspired by EA SPORTS FC’s in‑game mechanics.

The project is part of the Bay Area Host Committee’s Sports for All initiative and forms part of EA’s broader FC FUTURES program, which has already built or refurbished 22 pitches across 14 countries, reaching more than 500,000 participants worldwide.

Beyond the surface, the investment provides year‑round programming, coaching resources and a pathway for children to experience sport both on and off the screen, according to Andrea Hopelain, SVP of Global Marketing at EA SPORTS.

Young players moved through a series of activities designed by UEFA‑certified Coach Graeme, while coaches from the region were equipped with a free library of 27 practice sessions developed alongside UEFA coaches.

Cody Pillon, co‑founder and coach at Oakland Genesis, praised the collaboration, noting that the blend of capital, expertise and curriculum creates a sustainable model for grassroots development.

The Oakland build exemplifies how a media and gaming brand can leverage its digital identity to fund physical infrastructure, a strategy that industry observers say could reshape community sport funding.
