Eagle Scout Constructs Custom Skate Racks for Austin Hockey Community

Ayen Messick's Eagle Project Merges Engineering, Upcycling, and Youth Hockey Outreach

A Scout's Ice‑Cold Innovation

At just three years old, Ayen Messick watched a Texas Stars AHL game and felt a spark that would later guide his Eagle Scout journey.

Motivated by that early exposure, he set out to solve a practical need at the Austin Metro Hockey Association, where donated skates often lingered without a proper storage solution.

Working with a team of fellow scouts, Messick engineered three mobile racks equipped with casters, allowing them to slip through the narrow door of the Crossover facility in Leander, Texas, and to be repositioned as required, with a total of twelve shelves to accommodate a variety of equipment.

One of the most inventive elements was the upcycled hockey net, refurbished into a donation bin with a plexiglass front, providing a secure showcase for gently used gear and even incorporating a refurbished youth goal as the bin’s base.

After presenting a 3D model to Angie Vaught, the association’s director, Messick navigated an approval process that stretched from January to May 2025, finally breaking ground in August and completing the build by October.

Beyond the racks, the project reflects Messick’s ambition to study mechanical engineering at Penn State, where he hopes to return to the ice — this time on frozen lakes that echo the community rinks that first inspired him.
