A Culture Built on Perseverance
The Eagles of Columbia High finally snapped a century-long winless streak that had haunted the program since 2015, routing Greensboro High 41-14 in a game that felt more like a coronation than a comeback.
What made the victory especially striking was the size of the roster. When head coach Sammie Coates took over last year, he trimmed the squad to just 28 players, a fraction of the 50-plus typically seen on high school fields, before rebuilding it around a culture of accountability and relentless effort.
The match began with Greensboro striking first, jumping to a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter. Yet the Eagles, undeterred, rallied in the second half, scoring three unanswered touchdowns while keeping their opponents shut out the rest of the way.
Coach Coates, a former Auburn University standout and NFL draft pick, credited the win to the players’ unwavering commitment to the team’s newfound values. “They bought into the process,” he said, emphasizing that development off the field was as important as any drill on it.
The next test arrives Friday night when Columbia travels to face East Limestone High. A win there would cement a two-game winning streak and raise hopes that the program is finally on an upward trajectory.
