Eagles stumble in early-season test
American University’s men’s soccer side fell 2-0 to Hofstra in their opening non-conference clash, a result that leaves the Eagles with a 0-1-1 record after two matches.
Hofstra opened the scoring early, capitalizing on a turnover that set up Bastian Carlman’s swift transition play, and added a second before halftime when Ben Schultz slipped a pass to Sean Keane for the decisive strike.
Despite controlling much of the second half, American University could not convert its dominance into goals, with Chris Sullivan’s header in the 85th minute representing the closest the Eagles came to a response.
The match was played in Hempstead, New York, and the loss underscores the team’s need to sharpen finishing before conference play begins.
Next up, the Eagles travel to face Virginia on August 28 at 7 p.m., a test that will reveal whether the early-season adjustments can translate into results.
