A Weekend of Triumph in Oxford
From June 20 to 22, youth baseball teams representing communities across east Alabama converged on Oxford for the USSSA Alabama All‑State Championships. The event gathered the region’s most promising young talent, all eager to test themselves against top competition from across the state.
Among the standout performers was the Phenix City 8U East squad, whose coaches and players entered the tournament with a clear mission: dominate the field and bring home the championship trophy. Head coach Cyle Rasmus emphasized the team’s relentless work ethic, noting that the players were eager to practice and improve after a successful previous season.
The Phenix City 8U East team opened pool play with decisive victories over Glencoe and Shelby County, then surged through bracket competition with a 12‑2 win over Priceville and an 11‑3 triumph against the Northport Nationals. The team’s offense continued to click, posting a 14‑3 victory over Centre and an 8‑0 shutout of Alexandria, never allowing more than three runs in any game.
Coach Rasmus highlighted the team’s confidence, stating that the players entered each game with a strong desire to practice and refine their skills. Their dominant performances, which included double‑digit scoring in four of five contests, culminated in an undefeated run that ended with a championship title.
Other East Alabama Champions
The success did not stop with the 8U East side. The Phenix City 10U West team also captured a championship, finishing the tournament 6‑0 and defeating Meridanville 13‑7 in the final. Meanwhile, the Phenix City 9U squad edged the Northport Nationals 13‑12 in a nail‑biting championship game, while the Auburn 10U team fell just short, losing 10‑9 to Oxford Gold.
Additional podium finishes included a 7U East team that advanced to the semifinals before a narrow loss, and a Smiths Station 7U squad that finished 2‑2 after victories over Wal‑Win and Alabaster. Across all age groups, the ten qualified East Alabama teams compiled a combined 33‑11 record, underscoring the region’s depth and competitiveness.
The collective achievement reflects a strong developmental pipeline in east Alabama youth baseball, with coaches attributing the success to sustained practice, community support, and the experience gained from previous seasons. As the teams return home with trophies and memories of hard‑fought battles, they leave a lasting impression of excellence on the state’s baseball landscape.
