A Season of Growth
The East Rowan Mustangs closed out the 2025 campaign with a 4‑7 overall record, finishing 2‑5 in the South Piedmont Conference and slipping to sixth place in the league.
Head coach Brian Flynn, now in his third year at the helm, remains optimistic that the team is finally turning the corner after two winless seasons early in his tenure.
The offense will be anchored by quarterback Julian Cauble, who showed flashes of playmaking ability, along with running back Jaxon Lyons and receiver Jason Bonds, who together accounted for a sizable share of the team’s yards last season.
Defensively, the line will need to replace several starters, but linebacker Ashur Tesh is expected to provide a much‑needed boost after returning from injury, giving the unit a potential anchor for the front seven.
Adding to the excitement, former baseball standout Sam Blackwelder is making a comeback on the gridiron, promising to upgrade the receiving corps with his speed and hands.
The Mustangs have already tasted victory over county rivals such as Salisbury and South Rowan, and the coaching staff believes those wins are a sign of growing competitiveness within the South Piedmont Conference.
Historically, East Rowan has enjoyed playoff runs that reached the third round in 2012 and 2014, and the program is now eyeing its 300th all‑time win while aiming for a league championship that has eluded them since 1997.
Looking ahead, the schedule includes matchups with North Rowan, Wheatmore and West Rowan, culminating in a marquee scrimmage at Catawba College that could serve as a final tune‑up before conference play.
