A Fresh Batch of Talent
Eastern Illinois University’s men’s soccer program is set to welcome twelve new faces for the 2026 campaign, a mix of four‑year transfers, junior‑college standouts and high‑school recruits. The exhibition season kicks off on August 9 against Lewis & Clark Community College, and the regular‑season home opener follows on August 27 when the Panthers host Wright State.
The incoming class reflects a global reach, with players arriving from stateside powerhouses such as Monroe University in the Bronx, Maryville University in St. Louis, and Neosho County Community College in Kansas. International transfers add further depth, including Bernardo Hanel, who arrives after a NJCAA National Championship run at Indian Hills Community College, and Sein Hatamoto, a newcomer from Casper College in Wyoming.
Among the newcomers are Kevin Varnardo and Oscar Diaz, both joining from Brazil, as well as Yoshiaki Takahara, Daizo Okitsu and Miguel Cedeno, who bring experience from Japan and Spain. Local talent such as Owen Johnson, a Chicago product, and Kai Odagiri, a transfer from Otero Junior College in Colorado, round out a roster that blends regional and overseas expertise.
Building Toward a Competitive Season
Coach Ruy Vaz expressed confidence that the new additions will elevate the team’s competitiveness, noting that the blend of domestic and foreign experience creates a unique chemistry. With the exhibition match against Lewis & Clark providing an early test, the Panthers hope to fine‑tune strategies before the August 27 showdown with Wright State, a game that will mark the first home appearance of the season.
