A New Chapter for Eastern Michigan Basketball
Eastern Michigan University is set to launch its 2026‑27 men's and women's basketball campaigns within the newly structured Mid‑American Conference‑Sun Belt Conference Challenge, a partnership that blends the competitive calendars of two established leagues.
The men's team will open the season on the road against Coastal Carolina University, while the women's squad will welcome Appalachian State University to the EMU Convocation Center for their first home contest. Both games mark the first of several scheduled confrontations that will unfold throughout the season.
Guiding the men is first‑year head coach Billy Donlon, who inherits a roster anchored by returning standouts Mohammad Habhab and Gregory Lawson II. Under head coach Sahar Nusseibeh, the women's side brings back Peyton Hill, the recent MAC Freshman of the Year, who will look to build on her breakout performance.
Strategic Scheduling and Broadcast Reach
The Challenge features twelve institutions from each conference, guaranteeing each team a home and an away fixture against a counterpart from the opposite league. Matchups are determined in real time by NET rankings and other performance metrics, a process coordinated with Ordinal Sports Group to ensure competitive balance.
All contests will be streamed on an ESPN platform, giving the MAC‑SBC Challenge a national audience and reinforcing the partnership's visibility beyond the traditional conference borders.
The second round of fixtures for each side is slated for February 2027, with the Sun Belt Conference men's teams and the MAC women's teams slated to host those games, further emphasizing the collaborative nature of the arrangement.
