A New Era for the Eagles
The Eastwood boys soccer team concluded last season with a 12-6-2 record and earned a spot in the district championship game, a milestone that set high expectations for the program.
Entering his third year, Coach Curtis Smallwood confronts a dramatically altered roster. Seven seniors have graduated and an additional eleven players opted not to return, leaving the squad smaller and eliminating the JV side.
Among those who departed were standout contributors such as Caden Oberhaus, Jonas Bushman, Cody Lutz, Austin Miller, Hunter Wilson, Nolan Taylor and Raif Johnson, each of whom played pivotal roles in the previous campaign.
Despite the losses, the Eagles will field experienced central midfielders Cody Hefflinger and Hayden Cadaret, alongside center back Oliver Phommalee, forming the core of a three‑person senior class.
Junior fullbacks Everett Ward and Ayden Heuerman return after completing their third year in the system, bringing athleticism and familiarity to the back line.
Adding to the mix, sophomore transfer CJ Carrizales arrives from Northwood, where he honed his skills at a high‑level club. State transfer regulations will limit his game availability, but his experience is expected to bolster the midfield.
Cultivating a Hive‑Mind Mentality
Coach Smallwood stresses a collective mindset, urging players to prioritize teamwork in both possession and defensive phases. The coaching staff has set high standards, demanding competitive intensity from every member of the squad.
The ultimate objective is to finish atop the NBC league and surpass last year’s record. By fostering a winning culture and leveraging the leadership of returning seniors, the Eagles hope to turn roster challenges into a source of strength.
