East Carolina University’s football program will carry a special helmet decal honoring former running back Chris Johnson during the 2026 season, a tribute to his courageous fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Johnson, who starred for the Pirates from 2004 to 2007, ranks third in school history for rushing yards and holds the all‑purpose yards record. His 4,200‑yard career included 42 touchdowns and earned him a first‑round selection in the 2008 NFL Draft.
After being diagnosed with ALS in June, Johnson has turned to his Instagram platform to amplify the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, raising both awareness and funds for research while encouraging fans to join the cause.
The decal features Johnson’s name, the number 5, and a blue ALS awareness ribbon set against a purple and gold background, symbolizing both his legacy and the fight against the disease.
