The Bibb County Board of Education recently approved a measure that will rename the baseball field at the Ed DeFore Sports Complex in honor of Eddie Ashley, a figure who shaped high school athletics in the region for more than three decades.
A career defined by excellence
Ashley’s coaching journey began at Northeast High School before he moved on to Southwest and Southeast, where he amassed a 333‑165 record that placed him among the winningest coaches in Georgia baseball history.
His teams captured regional acclaim, earning Georgia Athletic Region 4‑AAA Coach of the Year honors in 1986 and 1987, and he later served as the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association’s state baseball chairman from 1991 through 1997.
Ashley’s contributions were formally recognized when he was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Macon Sports Hall of Fame in 2018, cementing his legacy among the state’s sporting greats.
After stepping away from the dugout, he continued to serve the district as athletic director before retiring, leaving a blueprint of dedication and community involvement that still inspires current coaches and student‑athletes.
Local officials and former players alike have praised the decision, noting that naming the field after Ashley not only commemorates his achievements but also reinforces the values of perseverance and mentorship that he embodied throughout his career.
