A career spanning three decades
Eddie Olczyk announced his departure from Kraken TV after four seasons, citing a desire to place family at the center of his life for the first time in 25 years. The move ends a tenure that saw him blend playing experience, coaching, and commentary across multiple franchises.
Olczyk’s hockey story began on the ice, where he spent a lifetime as a player before transitioning to a second career as a TV analyst and coach. He honed his craft with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2000 to 2003, commuting from Chicago and leaving his family behind, then spent nearly three seasons coaching in Pittsburgh before being dismissed in December 2005.
He returned to Chicago to join the Blackhawks’ broadcast team in 2006, a role he held until 2022. During those years he shared the booth with his son Nick, a partnership that deepened his connection to the city and helped shape his decision to remain in Chicago despite the travel demands of the Kraken assignment.
When the Seattle Kraken offered him a commentator role, Olczyk embraced the challenge but soon realized the logistical strain of commuting and the limited home games were eroding the family time he sought. He will now continue his national duties with TNT, typically appearing once a week, while expressing gratitude to the Kraken organization for respecting his choice.
Olczyk leaves behind a reputation as one of hockey’s finest game commentators, having worked alongside legendary voices such as Doc Emrick, Kenny Albert, Pat Foley, Mike Lange, and Johnny Forslund. His blend of insight, warmth, and deep‑rooted knowledge has left an indelible mark on the sport’s broadcast landscape.
