Edmonson County Basketball Team Forfeits Rivalry Games Over Safety Concerns

Superintendent Brian Alexander cites player transfers to Leitchfield Grayson County as the reason for forfeiture, while the Cougars eye a comeback in upcoming seasons

Edmonson County High School’s basketball program has decided to forfeit its upcoming matchups against Leitchfield Grayson County after safety concerns surfaced in a rivalry that has intensified in recent years.

A Rivalry at a Crossroads

The decision comes after two of the Cougars’ leading scorers, Braden Wright and Jonah Massey, transferred to the rival school, prompting Superintendent Brian Alexander to intervene.

Alexander said the forfeiture is intended to avoid potential incidents during games that have grown increasingly heated, especially after the team reached the semi‑finals of the 2026 KHSAA state championships.

Looking Ahead

The Cougars will welcome Wright and Massey back next season, with senior recruit Jack Logsdon expected to shoulder the scoring load and start the year with a 2‑0 district record.

The postseason for the state championships is scheduled to begin in mid‑March in Lexington, giving the team a chance to rebound and chase a championship run.
