A calculated step toward the NHL
Tommy Lafreniere, a 19‑year‑old forward, was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the third round of the 2025 NHL Draft, landing the 83rd overall pick and entering the organization as a highly touted prospect.
After three seasons with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League, where he ranked third on the team with 77 points in 67 games, Lafreniere posted 56 points as a 17‑year‑old during the 2024‑25 WHL campaign, showcasing his offensive versatility.
Seeking a more structured development environment, he has committed to Western Michigan University, where the program promises intensive physical conditioning, nutrition planning and competition against older, more seasoned players.
His brief stint in the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors yielded a goal and an assist in five games, while the Condors added a single assist in three playoff contests, giving him a taste of professional intensity and exposing him to stronger opponents.
Oilers assistant general manager Kalle Larsson praised the move, noting that college hockey offers superior opportunities for strength training and skill refinement compared with the WHL, and that the prospect’s work ethic and versatility make him a promising two‑way forward.
Lafreniere says his primary goal for his freshman year is to earn ice time, emphasizing that every shift must be earned in a competitive collegiate setting, a mindset that aligns with the Oilers’ vision of him becoming a top‑nine NHL contributor.
Back in the WHL, Kamloops reached the playoffs but were swept in the first round by Kelowna, leaving Lafreniere to look ahead to the upcoming college season as a pivotal step toward his NHL aspirations.
