Preseason Dominance Signals a New Era
Edward Waters University has seized the spotlight in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, sweeping the league’s major preseason accolades. The Tigers earned the predicted No. 1 ranking and captured both the offensive and defensive player of the year awards, a rare double that underscores the program’s rapid ascent.
Player of the Year Honors
Running back Johntarrious Thomas was selected as the SIAC’s preseason offensive player of the year, while linebacker Trevon French earned defensive player of the year honors. Both athletes also secured First Team Preseason All‑SIAC nods, reflecting the depth of talent returning to the roster.
Coaches' Poll and Predicted Order
The preseason poll, decided by conference head coaches and sports information directors, placed Edward Waters ahead of traditional powerhouses Benedict College and Tuskegee University in the predicted order of finish. The vote highlights the growing confidence among peers that the Tigers will dominate the 2026 campaign.
All‑SIAC Selections and Program Momentum
David Smith of Benedict and Clark Atlanta sophomore Xzavier Jackson joined Thomas on the first‑team offense, while defensive back Aykenon Rodgers, defensive lineman Jaevin Jenkins and tight end Fatoma Paulk rounded out a defensive unit that earned multiple recognitions. Overall, Edward Waters placed six players on the preseason All‑SIAC teams, a testament to the program’s breadth of talent.
The university’s resurgence began with its reentry into the SIAC in 2021 after decades competing outside the conference. Since then, the team has steadily built momentum, culminating in the current preseason expectations that position the Tigers as the team to beat in the upcoming season.
