A Season of Triumph
The Edwardsville girls soccer team capped a remarkable season by finishing fourth in the Class 3A state tournament, securing the program’s second state trophy and extending a streak of three tournament appearances in just three years.
Their run was highlighted by a gritty overtime battle against the nation’s fourth‑ranked New Trier squad, where senior forward Anna Maxim equalised with 8:16 left on the clock before the match slipped away, and a narrow 1‑0 loss to Gurnee Warren in the semifinals.
Defensively, the squad had been untouchable for seven straight games before the tournament, a streak that began with a regional title win over Belleville West decided by penalty kicks, with goalkeeper Genny Burroughs making three crucial saves.
Coach Justin Bernaix praised the chemistry of a senior class that featured Burroughs, Thompson, Dimitroff, Maxim and several others, noting that the bond among the players was as strong as the on‑field performances.
Thompson led the offense with 19 goals, while Dimitroff added nine and Maxim contributed eight, and the returning scorers Reagan Jumper and Dylan Cohn will carry the attack forward, even as the team prepares to replace both starting goalkeepers.
Looking ahead, the defensive unit of Olivia Wolz, Kinsley Bernaix, Maggie Cadagin and Kaylee Spiller returns intact, giving the program a solid foundation for next season’s ambitions.
