A New Division Landscape
The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced that eight member schools have elected to advance to Division I for the 2026 football playoffs, a move that reshapes the competitive landscape across the state. Hudson High School is among the programs that submitted petitions and received approval to make the jump.
All eight schools began the season in Division II before the association approved their petitions, prompting a recalibration of regional brackets. Five of the newly promoted teams now sit in Region 1, while three are placed in Region 2.
Regional Shifts and Reassignments
The realignment triggers a ripple effect on neighboring districts, with Perrysburg and Toledo Whitmer shifting from Region 1 to Region 2, and Lebanon, Middletown and Springboro moving from Region 3 to Region 4. Upper Arlington, previously assigned to Region 2, will now compete in Region 3.
Overall, the shift adds 80 schools to Division I and trims Division II to 98 participants, reflecting a broader trend of programs seeking higher classification to enhance exposure and recruiting opportunities.
Implications for the Future
Stakeholders across the state are watching the changes closely, as the new structure could affect scheduling, travel logistics and playoff seeding. Coaches and administrators say the move may also influence enrollment decisions and community support for athletic programs.
